1. Local Islands Hopping

Since there are many local Maldivian islands, hopping between them is the best way to see more during your trip to the Maldives. We recommend choosing an atoll, which is a cluster of islands, and exploring a few of them.

Although the islands in an atoll may be close to each other,it doesn’t mean they are the same. Each one has its own unique charm and character.

Typically,a local ferry connects the islands within an atoll. For instance Ukulhas,Rasdhoo, and Thoddoo in the Alif-Alif Atoll(also known as North Ari Atoll) are only about 1–2 hours apart by ferry. You can ask about the timetable at the pier or book a speedboat through your homestay.

Grab the bag that carries it all with style and comfort.

You can choose to stay on one local or private island and visit nearby islands on a day or two-day trip.Or,like we did,you can enjoy a longer island-hopping adventure by spending a few nights on each island.

Local Maldivian islands follow a strict Muslim culture. It’s important to dress modestly by covering your shoulders and knees, and keep in mind that alcohol is not sold on these islands.

The local ferry between Thoddoo,Rasdhoo,& Ukulhas costs 22 MVR (about 1.40 USD) per person, one way.

2. House Reef Snorkeling

Snorkeling is easily one of the top activities in the Maldives,a place world-famous for its stunning underwater beauty.

Many local Maldivian islands have their own house reef filled with colorful corals and marine life such as turtles and rays, making it possible to snorkel straight from the beach. What more could you want?

Rasdhoo,Thoddoo,& Ukulhas each have a house reef.Ukulhas is known for having the best one with plenty of sharks, while Thoddoo is especially famous for its many turtles.

Snorkeling is free if you bring your own gear or if your accommodation provides it at no cost.Otherwise, you can rent equipment from your stay at a reasonable price.

3. Sandbanks

Visiting a sandbank in the Maldives is a truly magical experience.Ask the locals for the best time to visit the sandbank you plan to see.

From our experience,it’s best to visit during low tide when the sandbanks are fully visible,as they can disappear at high tide.

Our personal recommendations:

Costs vary. Walking to the sandbank in Dhigurah and swimming to the one in Mathiveri is free. If you prefer to rent a kayak, prices start at 25 USD for a double kayak for 4 hours.

4. Dolphins, Sharks, Mantas & Whalesharks

Do you share our love for ocean wildlife? The Maldives is the perfect destination, with incredible chances to see and even swim alongside dolphins, sharks, mantas, whale sharks, and many other amazing sea creatures in their natural habitat.

Our favorites were the dolphins, playful and full of energy, and the whale sharks, majestic gentle giants with their enormous mouths.

Accommodations on the local islands offer different tours for watching or swimming with ocean animals in the nearby waters. These tours can be quite costly, especially on remote islands like Thoddoo, Rasdhoo, and Ukulhas, but you can try bargaining the price, especially if you’re in a group.

If you plan to join several tours, consider staying a few days in Maafushi,a touristy island near the capital and Male Airport. Here, instead of paying 40–60 USD for a 2–3 hour manta tour, you can get a full-day boat trip with dolphins, sharks ,mantas and a sandbank for just 50 USD.

The tours are quite different. On the remote islands, you’ll join a small boat for 2–3 hours and often have the place to yourself. In Maafushi, the tours are on larger boats with more people and last the whole day. You’ll see and do more there, and the price is lower, but the experience feels less private.

Tours range from 40–200 USD per person. Prices are usually higher on remote islands and lower on touristy islands like Maafushi.

5. Maldives Sea Beach / Bikini Beaches

The Maldives is famous for its soft white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, making it the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful day in paradise.

Every local island has one or more designated tourist beaches where visitors can relax, sunbathe, and swim in regular swimwear. On other beaches, it’s important to respect the Muslim dress code by covering shoulders and knees.

The local Maldivian islands are generally small,so you can easily walk to all the beaches. In our experience, Thoddoo Island had the nicest beaches compared to Rasdhoo and Ukulhas.

This activity is completely free. You can walk to most beaches, find shaded spots under trees, and

6. Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) & Kayaking

Want to stay active while taking in the stunning views? Rent a stand-up paddleboard(SUP) or a kayak. Both are perfect in the Maldives because of the calm, shallow, and clear waters, which give you amazing visibility.

Rent a kayak or SUP to explore the coral reefs from above, visit sandbanks (like the two on Rasdhoo Island), and maybe even see turtles and other marine life.

Some guesthouses provide water equipment for free, while others rent it out starting at 25 USD for a double kayak for 4 hours.

7. Scuba Diving

The Maldives is one of the top scuba diving destinations in the world. The crystal-clear blue waters offer amazing visibility, and the marine life is rich and diverse, including manta rays, sharks, whale sharks, turtles, and dolphins, with excellent chances to see them up close.

Among the islands we visited in the Alif Alif Atoll(North Ari Atoll), Rasdhoo had the most dive centers and the closest dive sites. The centers offered affordable options, from beginner discovery dives to certified dives and courses.

If you choose to do multiple dives, the price per dive is around 40 USD.

Somehow sunsets in the Maldives feel more magical than anywhere else, painting the sky with unforgettable colors and creating a breathtaking natural show.

For us,Thoddoo Island offered the most breathtaking sunsets at its Sunset Point on the beach. Watching the sky turn golden while bats flew back from a nearby island as night fell made the moment truly unforgettable.

The best thing about sunsets? They’re completely free and can be enjoyed by everyone.

You can also take a sunset cruise and watch the sun slowly sink below the horizon while the ocean glows in shades of orange and gold.

9. Shark Feeding

On every island we visited,we noticed that in the late afternoon when fishing boats return, fishermen clean their catch right at the pier on large tables. Afterward, they toss the remains into the water, instantly drawing sharks and mantas close to the surface.

Watching them up close at the pier is an unforgettable experience. It may not be for everyone, but if you are interested, you can even ask the fishermen for some remains and feed the sharks yourself.

You can observe the fisherman at the right time for free.

10. Resort Day Pass

If you choose to stay on the local Maldivian islands, which are more budget-friendly,you can still enjoy the luxuries of a resort by getting a day pass. This usually gives you access to pools, beaches, and sometimes even meals.

We suggest trying meals at small local eateries or cafes. They serve authentic Maldivian dishes at low prices, such as kuli boakiba(spicy fish cakes),gulha(fried fish dumplings),or bis keemiya(tuna and egg-filled pastry).

We also had the most amazing kottu at Bamboo Hut Restaurant in Rasdhoo.

Local Maldivian food costs between 2-5 USD,which is much cheaper than the 5-20 USD dishes in tourist restaurants.

13. Romantic Beach Dinner

Is there a more romantic place on earth than the Maldives? Surprise your loved one with a beachside dinner at sunset, complete with a bottle of champagne,a private waiter, and a meal prepared right at your table.

The prices for a romantic beach dinner start at 100 USD per couple.

14. Culture Events

If you’re curious about Maldivian culture, check the dates of local events and festivals on the islands you plan to visit. If you get the chance to attend, you can enjoy traditional dances, music performances, and religious celebrations.
