Why choose Mathiveri Island?
3 reasons to visit Mathiveri Island:
1. Picnic Island
One main reason we picked Mathiveri was its easy access to a beautiful Picnic Island. Mathiveri Finholu is a tiny uninhabited island about 100 meters from Mathiveri.During low tide you can walk to it,and when the water is high you can reach it by swimming, kayaking,or taking a boat.
2. Manta Rays
Snorkeling with manta rays is a top activity in the Maldives.A great spot to see them daily is between Mathiveri and Ukulhas Islands. This close location makes manta ray trips from these islands cheaper than from more distant ones.Mathiveri is perfect if you want to skip the busy Ukulhas but still see manta rays.Omadhoo, in southern Ari Atoll, is another great place for manta ray sightings and can be combined with a visit to Dhigurah Island.
3. Authentic Island
Mathiveri is much quieter than nearby islands like Ukulhas and Rasdhoo, which was another reason we chose it.The island has kept its authentic local feel, beautiful nature, and affordable local food.
Where is Mathiveri Island Located?
Mathiveri Island sits in the North Ari Atoll of the Maldives, also called Alif Alif Atoll.Nearby islands like Feridhoo,Thoddoo,Ukulhas, and Rasdhoo are easy to reach by ferry or speedboat, which makes them nice add-ons to your trip.

Best Time to Visit Mathiveri Island?
The Maldives has a tropical climate,so it stays warm all year.Mathiveri Island is good to visit anytime. The dry season runs from November to April, and the rainy season goes from May to October.
Even though the wet season brings more rain, you’ll still get many sunny days.We visited in March and again in August and had great weather both times. If you travel during the rainy season,it’s smart to add one extra day to each island in case of rain. The lower room rates make it a good deal.
- Dry season (Nov-Apr): You’ll get more sunny days and calmer seas, but you’ll also see more visitors and higher room rates.
- Rainy season (May-Oct): Stays are cheaper and the islands are quieter, but there’s a higher chance of rain and the sea can be rough.

By Ferry to Mathiveri
The most authentic,budget-friendly,but slower way to reach Mathiveri Island is by public ferry. This is the usual way locals travel in the Maldives.
First, take a ferry from Malé to Rasdhoo, then another ferry from Rasdhoo to Mathiveri. The whole journey takes about 6 hours, including a 1-hour lunch stop in Rasdhoo, and runs only a few times a week.Check the latest schedule on the MCTT website.Mathiveri also has ferry connections to Feridhoo,Bodhufulhufhoo, and Ukulhas.
Maldivian local ferries are often delayed and can even be canceled at the last minute due to weather. If your ferry is canceled in the morning(as they usually all leave in the morning),you can still try a morning or afternoon speedboat to reach your destination.

Best Food in Mathiveri
In the Maldives, most accommodations include breakfast in the room price. If you can choose between a continental and a Maldivian breakfast, try the Maldivian option at least once! It usually has mas huni,a mix of tuna, coconut, onions, and lime, served with flatbread. It’s incredibly delicious!
Our favorites were the crispy chicken burger and butter chicken with rice.Trust us,you’ll thank us later!

The picnic island near Mathiveri called Mathiveri Funolhu is stunning. It’s one of the easiest picnic islands to reach in the Maldives. You can get there for free by walking or swimming from Mathiveri’s Bikini Beach. It’s about 100 meters away depending on the sea level and tides.Be careful of the current as it changes every hour.
If you prefer to stay dry,you can rent a kayak, paddleboard, jet ski,or even a private boat.We went there every day and loved it.It’s usually quiet, and the island is big enough to find your own private spot. It’s also a great place to watch the sunset, just make sure you head back before it gets too dark.
2. Enjoy Tuorist Beach
Mathiveri has a lovely Bikini Beach that’s great for relaxing. It’s long, with swings under palm trees and shady spots where the forest meets the shore.Local vendors sometimes sell fresh coconuts and might even climb a tree to get one for you.It usually costs about 1 euro, cutting included. From this beach, you also get a nice view of the picnic island.
There’s also a smaller, quieter bikini beach called Sunset Beach that’s worth a visit.Remember, you can only wear swimsuits on designated bikini beaches on the local islands of the Maldives.

6. Sandbank and Dolphin Trips
The sandbank trip we took was pure magic. We had the sandbank Dhinolhu Finolhu, just 5 minutes from Mathiveri, all to ourselves and could stay as long as we wanted. These tiny islands appear and disappear with the tides, which makes them feel extra special. For an amazing day, combine a sandbank visit with a dolphin safari…you won’t regret it.

9. Lost Place: Madoogali Island
One of the locals told us about Madoogali Island,a hidden spot that used to be a private resort. Now it’s abandoned and really fun to explore. You can swim, snorkel, and feel like you’ve entered a forgotten paradise.

Conclusion
We loved Mathiveri because it had a bit of everything. It felt like a mix between a popular island like Ukulhas and hidden gems like Feridhoo or Omadhoo. It offered all the experiences you’d want in the Maldives, and the Picnic Island alone was reason enough to visit.
Personal Tip: If you’re choosing between Ukulhas and Mathiveri, pick Mathiveri for a quieter stay on a less developed island with a natural vibe.Choose Ukulhas if you want to meet people and enjoy more activities, hotels, and restaurants.
