Best time to visit Pidurangala Rock
Sri Lanka experiences two main monsoon seasons: the southwest monsoon and the northeast monsoon, each bringing rain to different parts of the country.
The best time to visit Pidurangala is during the dry season in southwest Sri Lanka, from December to March. You can also enjoy pleasant weather during the shoulder seasons, April to May and October to November when there are fewer crowds.

Sunsets at Pidurangala can be just as magical as sunrises, but they usually attract more visitors, making the experience less tranquil.
We don’t recommend visiting around midday because of the intense heat and strong sun.
Our Recommendation
Go for sunrise, and make sure to linger longer than most visitors. People usually come for the sunrise and leave quickly. At Pidurangala, it was the same.About an hour after sunrise, everyone had gone, leaving us alone to enjoy the views and capture photos in the soft, warm morning light.
How to get to Pidurangla?
There are several ways to reach Pidurangala. Most tourists stay in hotels in Sigiriya town.
From Sigiriya,you can easily reach Pidurangala by hiring a tuk-tuk or taxi.Be sure to agree on the price before your ride starts,and you can check with your hotel about the usual rates.In our experience,fares were around 100–150 LKR per kilometer.
You can also walk from Sigiriya town.Just check Google Maps to see the exact walking time from your accommodation.
You can rent a scooter or car and drive yourself.We suggest downloading offline maps on Google Maps,which makes navigating on your own quick and easy.
Our Recommendation
We found cheaper and more valuable hotels in Dambulla.We prefer not to rely too much on taxis and tuk-tuks, so we usually stay near public transport and rent a scooter for day trips. That’s why we decided to base ourselves in Dambulla. We got there by bus from the airport, and it was also a convenient spot to continue our journey to Kandy.
Our hotel in Dambulla was just a short walk from the bus terminal, which made things really convenient. From there, we rented a scooter and set off to explore, including a visit to Pidurangala.
Wild Elephants
Wild elephants are common in this area, and you’ll often see them crossing the roads.If that happens,keep a safe distance far enough that you’ll have time to turn around and drive away if they approach.Remember,elephants can move surprisingly fast.
If you spot elephants by the roadside,avoid stopping to take photos.It can be risky,as they’re sometimes aggressive toward tourists,and there have even been fatal incidents.For safety tips,you can always ask your accommodation before heading out on your own.There’s no need to be afraid,just approach the experience with caution and respect.
Arriving at Pidurangala
At the entrance to Pidurangala,there’s a parking area where you can leave your scooter or car.Locals mentioned that monkeys roam around here,so lock your vehicle properly and avoid leaving any food inside.
Right after the parking area, you’ll come across the ticket counter, where the entrance fee is 500 LKR (about 2 USD).
Also, dress respectfully when visiting,covering your shoulders and knees,since the area holds religious significance for the local community.
Pidurangala Rock Hike
Hiking up Pidurangala Rock takes around 20 to 40 minutes, and the entry fee is 500 LKR (about 2 USD).On the way up, you’ll also come across a few temples.
The hike is moderately challenging,with stairs,uneven paths,and a short five-minute stretch of rock climbing at the end.Because of this,it’s not ideal for people with mobility problems.The trail is clearly marked,so you can easily do it on your own.
From the top of Pidurangala Rock,you’ll be rewarded with an incredible 360° view of the jungle and Sigiriya Rock.It’s the perfect spot to relax, snap some photos,and take in the scenery.Bringing a few snacks and drinks can make the experience even better.
It takes roughly 30 minutes to hike to the top of Pidurangala.
